Please query first. You must query by e-mail. When you do so, please put QUERY in the subject line.

Due to the overwhelming amount of spam e-mail received, subject lines that have manuscript titles often do not reach the editors.

Your query should be brief, no more than a two-page description of your book. Do not send chapters or a full synopsis at this time.

Also, NO ATTACHMENTS —THEY WILL NOT BE OPENED. You will receive a response—either a decline or a request for more material—in approximately one to two weeks.

interested in: Avon Books is a romance imprint of HarperCollins. Right now Avon is looking for romances in several areas:

HISTORICAL ROMANCE (90,000—100,000 words)
At Avon, we're seeking deliciously romantic historical novels for all parts of the list. These are love stories set primarily in Great Britain before 1900, and they are filled with all the promise—and passion—that Avon readers expect.

CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE (90,000—100,000 words)
We seek stories of emotional complexity, written by authors with unique voices. Books with humor, drama, romantic suspense—all types and tones can be right for Avon. If your manuscript is exciting, electrifying, and exceptional we want to know more.

PARANORMAL ROMANCE (90,000—100,000 words)
Vampires, werewolves, and witches, oh my! We are seeking all types of paranormal romance, contemporary or historical. The darker the better.

AFRICAN-AMERICAN ROMANCE (90,000 words)
We are actively seeking romance with African-American heroes and heroines. These should be contemporary or historical love stories of approximately 90,000-100,000 words, set in the United States. This is not a ‘line.’ Each author will be packaged, and developed, individually. So, if your manuscript has the unforgettable emotion, irresistible characters (especially the hero), and sizzling sensuality that are hallmarks of Avon romance, please send us a query e-mail right away.

EROTICA (short stories 25,000—40,000 words/novels 80,000—90,000 words)
We are so excited to be at the forefront of this up-and-coming genre. The sexier the better is our motto. Avon Red began with two anthologies and we've now built up to 80,000 - 90,000 steamy one story novels. There are no holds barred in these super sensual stories. We're looking for more sexy novels and novellas, so, if we're going to need a cold shower after reading your manuscript, please send your query letter via e-mail today!

AVON A (60,000—90,000 words)
Avon A publishes general commercial women's fiction as well as quality nonfiction books that readers can relate to and get something out of. Both historical and contemporary stories are welcome. Our Avon A authors include Meg Cabot, Jacqueline Sheehan, and Tracy Grant.

INSPIRE (60,000—90,000 words)
Inspire is a new line of inspirational romances from Avon Books. These stories and their characters are primarily Christian, and promote traditional values and beliefs. They also are first and foremost stories of the heart, romantic novels about learning to trust; to open ourselves to love, not only to the men in our lives, but ultimately to God. Set in America, both contemporary and historical settings will be considered, as will romantic suspense and romantic comedy. There should be no alcohol, drug use, or premarital sex for the main characters. For non-Christian characters, these subjects can be explored but primarily to show their destructive nature and how a virtuous life is the better path. Foul language should be avoided at all costs.

Submit a query letter with a detailed synopsis and three chapters with a SASE.

Manuscript word length: Approximately 60,000–70,000 words
Manuscript pages: 200 pages

interested in: Books that young African-American readers can relate to, books that illustrate real-life situations they encounter without being preachy or naive. These stories will reflect current trends in pop culture as well as storylines taken straight from the headlines. Kimani TRU stories will explore various subjects, including teenage sexual activity, drug use, anti-achievement peer pressure, growing up in a single-parent home as well as the usual teenage angst that is part of any coming-of-age story for African Americans. Most important, Kimani TRU novels will focus on relationships: those with peers, family members, love interests and with other adults that influence the characters' lives.

There are a number of themes that can be explored in young adult novels: peer pressure to have sex, drink, use drugs or join a gang; conformity versus nonconformity; insider versus outsider; materialism and how it plays into teenage social pressure etc. Feel free to include aspects of all of these teenage dilemmas. But ultimately, the story should be a modern-day coming-of-age story for young African Americans.

If you're ready to share your vision of contemporary African-American romance, send a cover letter that briefly explains the nature of the story and any previously published work, a detailed synopsis covering the plot points and three sample chapters (published authors) or a detailed synopsis and a complete manuscript (unpublished authors).

interested in: Kimani Romance offers sexy, dramatic, sophisticated and entertaining love stories. It is the first and only series category romance line that features African-American characters exclusively. Our memorable characters work through compelling emotional conflicts on their way to committed and satisfying relationships, loving unions that last a lifetime.

Plot: Kimani Romance features hip, stylish, ripped-from-the-headlines plotlines as well as classic, tried-and-true ones. All of our books are contemporary romance. Kimani Romances are realistic and emotional with a mainstream tone. They are rich and sophisticated and always have innovative, creative and fresh plot developments with big, satisfying, resolved endings. The plots cover an extremely wide breadth including (but not limited to):
- Rags-to-riches, aspirational love stories that feature appealing characters who have “made it.”
- Sensual first-love, reunion and second-chance romances.
- Fast-paced, supersexy stories that are hip and hot.
- Emotional romances that revolve around a particular family or miniseries theme.
- Romances with elements of the following: urban flair, romantic suspense, romantic thriller and romantic comedies.
- Fantasy, escapist, über-wealthy romances.

Kimani Romances can be written in first or third person from the heroine’s point of view, or from both hero and heroine’s points of view, or omniscient narrator. All story settings will be considered, though the more exciting and original the better.

Characters: Kimani Romance heroines are realistic, capable and as committed to love as they are to their careers. They can be strong and independent, or vulnerable and searching. They must be easy for female readers to relate to and identify with. Our heroes are ambitious, strong, driven and positive contributors to their communities. They can be aggressive, serious, playful or intense; they can be players, reformed players, bad boys or innocents. Our characters’ personalities run the gamut—but they are always unforgettable. The heroine must be as well-developed as the mesmerizing, memorable hero.

Content: Each Kimani Romance is tightly focused on the primary romance between the hero and heroine. The developing romantic relationship is the core focus of each book. The narrative seldom strays from the arc of that romantic story line. Secondary characters and subplots are kept to a minimum, and only support the main romantic relationship.

Kimani Romance series romances should adhere to the following guidelines:
- The hero and heroine should be single—not in a relationship at all, recently engaged, recently divorced (not just separated), widowed or exiting a relationship.
- The hero and heroine should not be shown as sexually or emotionally involved with anyone else at the start of the romance.
- The hero should exhibit good character and not be abusive or violent toward the heroine, misogynistic, dishonest, amoral or engage in criminal behavior.
- The hero and heroine should be sympathetic characters to the reader. They should be educated and successful or on their way to success.
- Explicit and excessive profanity in the text and dialogue is not permitted. Condoms and safe sex should be used in intimate scenes where the hero and heroine are not married or not yet in an exclusive relationship. Drug use or alcohol abuse by the hero or heroine is not permitted. Use by secondary characters should be limited as well. Descriptions of violence should be kept to a minimum.
- Unless the story line has been approved by your editor, the heroine should not be pregnant before engagement or marriage. All children of the heroine and the hero—past and present—must be conceived within the confines of a long-term relationship, during an engagement or marriage.
- Unless the story line has been approved by your editor, the heroine or hero should: be between their early 20s and late 30s; not have children when the story opens; not be married to each oth
