Must submit via EMAIL. We are open to articles on holistic health, alternative healing, green living, sustainable and local food, social responsibility, conscious business, the environment, spirituality and personal growth; in short, anything that deals with a progressive, healthy lifestyle. The important words to remember when writing for WLT are ‘information’ and‘narrative style.’ We strive to provide leading-edge editorial that is not only entertaining, but also directly usable by our readers—information that mainstream media often abridges, is unaware of or is unwilling to print.

WLT’s content is largely local — issues, events and people in southern California — but we do publish some stories with a broader focus. In generic features (e.g. health-related), we use local sources for quotes and back-up information.

WLT accepts up to three longer stories (800-1,100 words) per issue, and pay ranges from $150-200.

In addition, we have a number of regular departments on our coverage topics, and these pay $75-125 depending on topic and experience.

Out and About is our FOB section featuring short, newsy blurbs on our coverage topics. These are generally 200-400 words and pay $25-50 depending on length and topic.

Behind the Scenes is a 750-word personal essay that often highlights a seminal moment or event in the life of the writer, and pays $100.

If you have not written for us before, please be sure to include your bio and up to three published clips or links. Alternatively, you may submit a completed manuscript. If your article addresses the categories described above, your treatment of the issue, the timeliness of the article and the quality of your writing are the main keys to getting published.

Submissions should be typed and double-spaced in AP style. Please attach an MS Word file, and also copy and paste your story in the message section of your email. Please do not send a PC-specific file as we may not be able to open it.
Please suggest a Hed and Dek for your story.

submissions accepted: Year Round,

You&Me America's Medical Magazine seeks non-fiction articles, perferably from a first-person perspective, about the human aspects of dealing with all medical issues, from the life threatening to the chronic to the so-called "trivial." They do not want all happy endings or all sad endings- they invite articles dealing with end-of-life issues from a first person or close family perspective. They can use some health-care provider prospectives, poetry and expressionistic pieces, and cartoons.

Make it intimate and personal. No informational articles.

Submit a query via e-mail only: describe the nature of your work, how long it is, and any other details you feel are important (such as whether or not you have photos with the text). You may want to include a brief excerpt from the work. SEND THE QUERY IN THE BODY OF THE EMAIL. No attachments.

pays: $Varies, word count: 2000-3000, submissions accepted: Year Round,

Diabetes Self-Management magazine is written for the growing number of people with diabetes who want to know more about controlling and managing their diabetes. Its readers need up-to-date and authoritative information on nutrition, pharmacology, exercise, medical advances, self-help, and a host of other how-to subjects. They address the day-to-day and long-term concerns of their readers in a positive and upbeat manner and enable them to make informed choices about managing their diabetes.

The rule of thumb for any article is that it must be clear, concise, interesting, useful, and instructive, and must have immediate application to the day-to-day life of the readers. For that reason, they do not publish personal experiences, personality profiles, exposes, or research breakthroughs. Their audience ranges from the person newly diagnosed with diabetes—who has little knowledge of diabetes—to people who have been intimately involved in their own treatment for many years and often know more about diabetes than well-informed health writers. They do not assume knowledge of their audience, but they do assume intelligence and are careful not to write down to readers.

Most articles range between 2,000 and 3,000 words. Previously published material will not be accepted.

Yoga Journal is a bimonthly magazine that covers the practice and philosophy of yoga. In particular they welcome articles on leaders, spokespersons, and visionaries in the yoga community; the practice of hatha yoga; applications of yoga to everyday life (e.g., relationships, social issues, livelihood); hatha yoga anatomy and kinesiology, and therapeutic yoga; nutrition and diet, cooking, and natural skin and body care.

Writers are encouraged to read an issue of Yoga Journal carefully before submitting a query. Keep in mind the editorial department's three E's: Articles should be enlightening, educational, and entertaining. Avoid New Age jargon and in-house buzz words. Features run approximately 2,000 to 3,500 words; Departments 1,000 to 2,500; Yoga Diary 250.

Yoga Diary is a first-person story that appears in the front-of-book Om section and tells about a pivotal moment in the writer's yoga experience. This is the only feature for which they accept unsolicited manuscripts instead of queries.

Buys 50-60 mss/year. Yoga Journal encourages a well-written query letter outlining the subject and describing its appeal. Query before submitting an article.

Submit via e-mail or regular post.

Winner magazine provides drug education and life-skills training slanted toward students in the fourth through sixth grades. The overall premise of Winner is that preventive drug education is the most effective. We not only communicate the facts and figures about the dangers of drugs, but we also address the development of life skills and real-world problem solving.

Because of Winner's target age group, we like writers to use what we call a story-article form: present the factual information within the framework of a story. Reading a sample copy will show you what we mean.
